"Never afraid to question sacred texts, ancient rituals, and religious bias -- Aylonis a role model for all artists. Whatever Is Contained is an arresting tale of uncommon courage, intelligence, and wit."
- GAIL LEVIN, author of

". . . No matter that I had been working as an artist for over two decades; I still felt like a schoolgirl trying to explain myself to Mother. Only now there was more, much more to explain, because I was not just explaining myself, but explaining myself in relation to the Jewish nation and in relation to the whole family, which was like a small nation in itself. Mother was not sure if witnessing my highlighting at the museum was a celebration or an aggravation. But, she comforted herself, if the Jewish Museum was showing this work, it must be kosher.
"To take her mind off my questionable contribution to Judaism, I wheeled Mother around the entire “Too Jewish?” group exhibit in a wheelchair provided by the museum and at least tried to explain the other artists’ work. She liked the Debra Kass image of Barbra Streisand as Yentl because, as she explained, “that was positive.” And Yentl took on the name Anshel, Daddy’s name, when she posed as a boy in order to learn in the Yeshiva. Never mind that Yentl appeared in drag; she was carrying a siddur, a prayer book. She was not pointing a finger at the Torah, like me."
